How long have you used Emery-Pratt as a book vendor?

Approximately 10-12 years or longer.

Why did you decide to order from us?

Many reasons. First, good prices, delivered prices and friendly and very helpful customer service reps. I also appreciate the fast turnaround time I receive when I ask for a quote and the fact that I don't have to keep calling to see if that information is available yet.

Is there one service we offer that you find is of great value?

Yes, my Customer Service rep really goes out of her way to research products I am looking for. Information such as the ISBN number, publication date and publisher are always provided to make sure that the book I am looking for IS the book I am looking for.

Any other comments?

Just that it is a pleasure to deal with you...You make my job so much easier...and I always look great to the staff here when the books show up in a very timely basis at great prices. Sometimes, staff just provides half the information I need, but my Customer Service Rep is terrific, gets me the product and makes me look great.

Carol retired on January 8, 2009 and Emery-Pratt Company would like to wish her all the best for a happy retirement!

What's Right With America

We've decided to start 2009 off with a new column in our bi-monthly newsletter. In this column we would like to share with you some things that are right with America.

Times are tough right now for many businesses and families and the talk of our nations problems may surround you on a daily basis. But, just for a moment, let's talk about the good.

  • Compassion is ingrained in our culture like no other. Americans donate the most to charities and give more than twice as much as the next closest country. And it is not just the wealthy who are generous. Two-thirds of American families making under $100,000 a year give to charity.
  • America's universities, ranked among the best in the world, don't require wealth to get in. You just have to be smart enough and work hard for it. America has more students in college right now than Japan, India, and China combined.

We know we are lucky to live in America, and we hope we have helped you to remember some of the reasons why.

BOOK REVIEW

TRUE COLORS

Author: Kristin Hannah

True Colors is a novel about sisters and what it truly means to be a family.

The Grey family realizes that it wasn't property lines or markers on a man's land that outlined the boundaries of a home, it was who you were that mattered, how you stayed together in hard times, and the people you held in your heart.

In the Spotlight

Meet Joanne Luchenbill! It has been nearly 25 years ago that Joanne began working at Emery-Pratt Company. As Administrative Assistant to Emery-Pratt President, Maurie Shattuck, Joanne's duties include, “Whatever Maurie needs me to do, which has made for an extremely interesting and fulfilling job.”

Married to her husband Ed for 46 years, they have two adult children: Scott, who is married to co-worker Sally Kitchen's (Customer Service) daughter, Karla, and daughter Laura, married to Andy. They have five grandchildren ranging in age from 23 down to 11.

With five grandchildren who compete in horses, football, basketball, skiing, band and all school activities, you can see that Joanne and Ed have a full calendar.

In her spare time, Joanne loves photography and stamping cards. Joanne mentioned that “When I look at my craft area and see my brushes and canvas I'd like to get back to painting and my Viking sewing machine also calls to me.”

Joanne loves reading Nicholas Sparks books and enjoys John Jakes and all his historical novels. “Working at Emery-Pratt has allowed me to purchase great books for my family and they really do have wonderful libraries.”

Joanne's co-workers comment that Joanne is “Respectful and considerate of others.” “She is trustworthy and dependable, someone that others want to work with and spend time with in the workplace.”

Thanks Joanne for being an outstanding employee and for your dedication, hard work, and contribution to the success of Emery-Pratt.

Take Action

“Be quick, but don't hurry. By that, I meant make a decision, take action; decide what you're going to do and do it. Keep this word of caution in mind: Failure to act is often the biggest failure of all.”

-John Wooden (former UCLA Basketball Coach)

With every new year comes New Year's resolutions. Losing weight, eating better, spending more time with family, debt reduction, further education – the list goes on. These resolutions express our desire to improve in the coming year. But reaching our goals in any of these areas takes more than just good intentions – it requires action. And taking action on what you want to achieve requires a choice.

In his book Mastering the Seven Decisions, Andy Andrews talks of Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a Union colonel in the Civil War. Chamberlain said, “My future is immediate. I will grasp it with both hands and carry it with moving feet. When I am faced with the choice of doing something or doing nothing, I will always choose to act.” We each need to make a choice if we are to move toward achieving our goals.

In Proverbs 10:4 King Solomon speaks of making such a choice when he says, “Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth” (NIV). As this is true for financial success, it is true with any other goal before you. To achieve your goals you must be diligent and move toward them.

Everyone has the same opportunity to take action. Whether it's a resolution for the coming year, or any other objective you would like to achieve, take action. Decide to do something, move forward, and reach for your goals.

Love is the condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.

~Robert Heinlein

My name is Julie Davis. I have worked at Emery-Pratt for almost eight years. I have three children: Cody 12, Alexis 11, and Jacob 9.

Every year at Emery-Pratt we hang Christmas stockings in the lunch room—one for each employee. This gives every employee an opportunity to hand out Christmas cards to each other.

My children have been signing Christmas cards since Jacob could write his own name. My children look forward to this every year. This past Christmas they each picked out flavored candy canes to put in each card. It's amazing how one simple act can make a difference in someone's life.

My children sit in a circle on the floor in the living room and one will sign the card and pass it around. Cody is very artistic and even drew some pictures on several of the cards.

I take the cards home that I receive in my stocking and my kids take turns taping them to our closet door. They always look forward to this. Some employees even address the cards to me and to my children. That makes the kids feel super special.

An Emery-Pratt tradition has turned into our family tradition. Thank you for letting my family be a part of your family.
